Christ Holds The Promise of Peace

Life is more than the emotions we feel.

They come and go, ebbing and flowing. Though during the strongest swells of feeling it can be hard to remember and hold on to truth. When heaviness comes and joy evades me, my heart stumbles to remember that my unceasing joy hasn’t truly left.

Yet maturity in Christ brings steadiness and strength to ride the waves smoothly; to not be capsized and tossed to and fro. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us God has given His children a spirit capable of overcoming: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” ‭‭(ESV‬‬).

When we cling to emotions, when we fan them into something larger than they should be, and when we refuse to let them go, we end up hurting ourselves and often others in the process. Yet even in our setbacks, grace washes away the hurt and makes us clean.

“For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14, ESV).

God knows our design and temperaments well. He is never surprised by us. He offers grace, forgiveness, and help. He understands the emotions that we don’t. He holds the promise of peace.

Some days, heaviness refuses to leave us and the whispering of false feelings keeps tugging us down. But the Father’s truth is stronger. Anger, sadness, confusion, whatever it might be, He provides the necessary help to get back to peace and to deal with the emotion rightly. It might mean the emotion doesn’t fade but it will not rule. With steadiness comes freedom. And He always provides a way out.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭13, ESV‬‬).
