When I finished college, God began to feel distant. I could no longer call myself a student, I entered a season of unemployment, and at 21 I was having an identity crisis. I knew that God had brought me to this place in my life, but I had no idea what He was calling me to do in it.During this time, I was deeply moved by the book of Esther. She was a woman who experienced loss, hardship, uncertainty, and change. She was made Queen out of extraordinary circumstances, and while she could see God’s provision and protection in her life, she didn’t know the extent to which God was going to use her position to bring Him glory. You can read Esther for the full story, in which the details and plot twists are truly amazing. The main event, however, is that God uses Esther to save the Jewish people from being murdered. Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, encourages her to use her position as Queen to stand up for the Jewish and attempt to protect them. He said to her, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, ESV). What if we, as women of God, asked ourselves this question? What if this moment, the very one we are walking through, is a God-ordained moment that He intends to use to bring Him glory?Esther didn’t know the outcome that awaited when she took these steps of faith, just like we don’t always see how God is working out all of the details in the situations we face. But in the very same way God protected Esther in her boldness and provided for her in her willingness to obey, we can trust that He’ll do the same for us.In our uncertainty and questions, we can rest knowing that God has sovereignly allowed it all for a specific and glorious purpose. We must pray that the Lord makes us aware of every “Esther-moment” He brings us to. We must pray that our circumstances never distract us from the faithfulness of God to use us in His kingdom-building work.We must pray that He prepares us for such a time as this.
