When the storms roll in on our sunny skies and replace the days with clouds and gloom, it’s easy to adopt a “when it rain, it pours” mentality. That’s one mental rut I got stuck and stranded in when my gaze met the clouds and stopped seeing the light.Coming out of an intense bout with depression last year, God graciously brought me back to a place where He’s always been so faithful to meet me sweetly: Haiti. Still in need of a great deal of heart healing at the time, I was reluctant to serve and lead a group of teenage missionary kids. One evening as we prepared for a night of praise and scripture in the tin-covered, cement Haitian house of worship, rain poured down so fiercely that even with a sound system the preaching of the word was inaudible. We grew discouraged, blaming the enemy for a ploy to deter us from kingdom good. Until we opened the eyes of our hearts to look beyond the rain and find awe in its Maker.Shedding our conventional confines of worship, we embraced the storm head on dancing in the rainfall, singing praises unashamedly amongst the thunder, and letting joy fall fresh on our souls! I experienced in a new way that evening to appreciate the storms of my life and not avoid them.Too often I have sat in defeat awaiting the storm to pass rather than seeking the Lord and what truth He intends to use through it to saturate my soul. Scripture says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth” (Isaiah 55:9-11, NIV). God promises to make fruitful use of each and every rainfall you endure. Rain does not fall without yielding a return and the same is true for strife in your life! So wait not in expectation but soak in each nourishing drop from the Lord!
