"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
-Isaiah 55:8 (ESV)
This is one of those verses that most people know, yet it is difficult to learn sometimes. I always have some sort of plan for my life, so when God reminds me that those plans aren't what He has in mind, I don't always react with joy. I know in my heart God is sovereign, and I am truly comforted that He knows all things and has a plan. But when He tells me, "This is not My plan right now, daughter," I'm usually a bit devastated each time. This happened recently, and it has me wondering: How can women of God be both organized in planning, but joyful in remembering this verse at the same time? How can we plan without being so set on those plans?

The image of open hands comes to mind. Imagine kneeling before our Father with your hands open. Resting on your palms are the plans you have—the plans you made and that you're praying about. When you finish praying, do you keep your hands open to the Lord, or close them tightly in an attempt to keep things your way? I typically do the latter. I pray that my plans are part of God's will, but then I go about my days with a death grip, not willing to truly be okay if my plans don't happen.

You see, if I were to finish my prayers and then keep my hands open to the Lord, I wouldn't be so devastated and shocked if He later says "No" or "Not yet." If I make plans while keeping this verse on my heart, I would be able to respond with joy and peace to God's different plans, knowing His way is best.

If you struggle with this, join me in the process of keeping our hands open. Together, let's not just say the Lord's way is best, but let's live like it's true. While we continue to prayerfully make life plans, let's trust that ultimately our Father's timing is best. By trusting with hands open, we will be able to respond in joy and contentment, rather than hurt.
