Daily Delight
“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “'Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on,'" (Mark 12:41-44, ESV).
I watched a video recently of a man conducting a sort of social experiment about homelessness. He approached a homeless individual and offered him a one hundred dollar bill with the intent to film the man’s actions once he took the money. He, alongside his camera man, filmed the next few minutes without catching the attention of the homeless man.
At first, the man was dismayed. Upon receiving the money, the homeless man entered a liquor store and exited with a large plastic tote that he brought alongside him to a nearby park. Quickly though, he resolved that any bias he had towards how the money would be spent was shattered. The homeless man unloaded the contents of his bag and began handing out meals to other impoverished people around the park. Shocked, the man approached him once again and explained the ordeal, pointing out his camera man and sharing his surprise. “Do you know these people you’re giving food to?” “No.” The man asked honestly about his circumstances and learned that he had become homeless following the death of both of his parents, only two weeks apart.

Despite his circumstances, he gave generously. Can you imagine having almost nothing (monetarily), and giving away all that you have? The widow is defined as poor, yet I would argue that this is not descriptive of her faith, or her heart, but only her wealth. “…but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
