God's promise to us through Paul's words in Philippians 4:6-7 is one to memorize. It reads, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (ESV). Being such a well-known verse, I often read over it too fast. But when I pause and really focus what it says, I'm amazed again by our Father.

I often get stressed and worried very quickly, and I spend a while feeling anxious before I turn to God in prayer. I want to change that and live out this verse. Rather than giving in to anxiety, I need to immediately bring everything to God with prayer and supplication. Supplication is "asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly." When those moments come that stress us out and give us anxiety, we are to drop to our knees with a humble heart, begging our Father for help. But that's not all. We must be thankful, as well. Thanking God for Who He is in the midst of our desperate prayers brings our focus back to His goodness and off of our problems. Letting our requests be made known to God with a thankful attitude will already begin to relieve the anxiety.

But here's the best part, sisters: When we do this, God's promise to His children is that His peace will wash over us. It's so overwhelming and calming that it fills our entire being because only God can give it, nobody else. This is a peace knowing God is in control, He is big, He is sovereign, and He is fully capable to do what is best for us. This peace will guard us from further anxiety and fear.

We all long for this wonderful, inner calm when life makes us an anxious mess. So next time we feel anxiety sneaking up, rather than focusing on the problem, together let's remember this promise: Our God is the God of peace beyond all understanding.
