I’m a planner. I like to pull out my planner and plan my week in advance, make sure I know what’s going on every single minute of every single day. Why? Because I want to make sure things go the way I want them to, of course!
Anyone else like that?
The problem with wanting to make sure that everything goes perfectly, is that life doesn’t always go the way we plan it. The comfort of being a Christian means that we can trust that it always goes according to the way God wants it to.
And that’s the key.
We want to make sure that things go the way we want them to, but we don’t have that kind of control.
Jesus does, though.
See, the whole point of turning our lives over to Him, is that we give Him the control. By following after Jesus we are saying, “Lord, I can’t do this on my own. Please take over”.
He loves when we do that. He loves when we come to Him and ask Him to take over.
And you want to know a secret? He writes a better story than we ever will!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to ‘write my own storyline’ and it turns out to the opposite of what I had laid out in my mind.
But when I do hand over the pen, when I finally give up trying to control my own story and place it in God’s hand, my story always gets interesting!
I know it’s difficult, trust me. Even after seeing how my story goes when God’s writing it, I still somehow manage to take the pen from Him and try again and again to write it on my own. And when I sheepishly hand it back to Him, I can only imagine His loving hands gently taking it back with a smile on His lips.
Why a smile? Because all along He knows what we’re going to do. He watches us erase and cross out words that we wrote and rewrote knowing that He will turn our mess into a masterpiece.
At the end of the day, my heart knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that when I think I can control the story of my life, God is simply humoring me
Psalms 2:1-3, we read of people plotting vain, nations raging, rulers brainstorming. And then in verse 4, David writes, “He who sits in the heavens laughs…”
And that’s what I want to leave with you. God already knows what tomorrow is going to hold, what the next hour is going to hold. He has already written it all out. So when we sit here and try to make our own plans, I imagine He is sitting on His throne and shaking His head, laughing because we are trying to write a story better than what He already has planned.
When you really sit down and think about it, I bet you’ll find yourself laughing too.
