Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” – Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

When was the last time you introduced yourself to someone? Do you remember what you said, or what you didn’t say?

Having recently moved halfway across the country, I’ve had to introduce myself a lot in this season. Each time I do, I wonder how the person will respond: "Did I say the right thing? Will they like me? Will they think I’m weird?" I have hoped and prayed that others would not only like me, but also accept and validate me. It is my heart’s desire to belong, to be a part of something bigger, to be connected to others.

In light of this, God has revealed to me the importance of seeking Him first (Matt. 6:33). Through seeking Him first, I am able to root my identity in Christ. Paul wrote, “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago” (Ephesians 1:13, NLT). This verse tells us that we belong to God because Jesus identified us as His own people. He has given us a new life, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

I’m not sure what you need in this season. Maybe you have a need to belong, to be heard, or simply to be seen. Maybe you need healing, hope, or joy. Whatever you need, look to Jesus and let your roots grow down deep in His love. For through Him, you are able to face anything, even if it’s as simple as the next "hello".
