Finding Peace in Anxiety: How God Meets Us in Our Struggles
Overcoming Anxiety with Faith
Anxiety can feel overwhelming, keeping our minds racing and our hearts heavy. If you’ve ever felt paralyzed by anxious thoughts, you’re not alone. Many of us struggle with anxiety, but the good news is that God meets us right where we are. He speaks to us in ways that calm our hearts and remind us we are deeply known and loved.
My Personal Struggle with Anxiety
I’ve battled anxiety for as long as I can remember. It keeps my mind running in circles and leaves my decisions stalled. People might assume I’m confident, but the truth is, I often second-guess myself to the point of exhaustion. My thoughts feel like an endless loop, never fully resolving, just spiraling deeper.
I’ve had moments where I’ve walked into my home, only to have my husband look at me with concern as tears stream down my face. (Let’s just say I have a terrible poker face.) More often than not, I struggle to calm myself down.
But what my husband does in those moments amazes me. Whether I’m sitting at the counter or lying in bed, he simply comes and sits beside me. No words. Just stillness. And then, in the gentlest tone, he asks, “What’s going on?”
How God’s Gentle Presence Brings Comfort
My husband knows me so well that he understands what I need in those fragile moments. He knows that if he approached me with urgency or frustration, I might shut down completely. This reminds me of Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19:11-13.
Elijah had seen God’s power firsthand—fire from the sky, the dead raised. Yet, in 1 Kings 19, he found himself overwhelmed and running for his life. He was exhausted, afraid, and unsure of what would happen next.
God could have met Elijah with fire, wind, or an earthquake, as He had done before. But instead, He chose to speak in “a soft whisper” (1 Kings 19:12, CSB).
God Knows Exactly What You Need
How often do we doubt that God will care for us in the same way? Psalm 139:1 reminds us:
“Lord, you have searched me and known me” (CSB).
God understands you more intimately than anyone else. He knows when your heart is heavy, when your mind won’t slow down, and when you feel completely undone. And instead of overwhelming you further, He meets you with gentleness, love, and perfect understanding.
How to Find Peace in the Middle of Anxiety
If you’re struggling with anxiety, here are some faith-based ways to find peace:
1. Turn to Scripture for Comfort
God’s Word is full of reminders that He is our refuge. Meditate on verses like Philippians 4:6-7 (“Do not be anxious about anything…”) and Isaiah 41:10 (“Do not fear, for I am with you”).
2. Embrace the Power of Stillness
Like Elijah, sometimes what we need most is quiet stillness with God. Take a deep breath, find a moment of silence, and invite God to speak into your heart.
3. Pray with Honesty
God already knows your struggles, so be open with Him. Tell Him what’s on your heart and ask Him to give you peace that surpasses all understanding.
4. Seek Support from Loved Ones
Just as my husband supports me in my anxious moments, surround yourself with people who will encourage you and remind you of God’s truth.
You Are Known and Loved
No matter how overwhelming anxiety feels, remember this: God sees you. He knows you. He loves you. He meets you in your most fragile moments with gentleness and grace.
A Prayer for Anxiety
Lord, thank You for meeting me in my anxiety. Thank You for Your gentleness and for giving me exactly what I need in every moment. Help me trust You when my heart is restless and my mind won’t slow down. Fill me with Your peace, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alex Hanson
Alexandra (Alex) Hanson is loved by a King. She lives in good ‘ole Iowa with her husband of almost 2 years, Blake, and their two fur-babies, Violet and Ringo. She grew up reading books of fairytales and love overcoming all. While she hasn’t found herself living in a castle, she has discovered that Love did conquer all. Alex works in vocational ministry at Sunnybrook Community Church in Sioux City, Iowa. She does many things there, but her favorite part is leading people in worship through singing and writing.
Alex is a homebody at heart. She spends her free time mostly at home, reading books and watching movies with her husband. But, she also loves the outdoors. When it isn’t freezing or scorching hot in Iowa, you can find her exploring God’s Creation. On the side, she loves cooking and is in a local cover band. She believes that it’s important to break the stigma that following Jesus is a boring, mundane existence. Instead, she has found that a life being loved by and loving a King is one of adventure and joy. It’s the ultimate fairytale, because as we know, fairytales always have a happy ending.
