The Road Less Traveled
One of my favorite poems is "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. In it, he lays out the choices faced at a fork in the road during an adventure. There are paths that are well-worn and cleared away by others who traveled, while other paths are less traveled. Mr. Frost does not depict one road as preferred or write his poem as a way to share advice. Instead, he simply illustrates the feelings of confusion in one of the most human moments- making a choice.
How many choices do you think we are faced with in a day? A simple Google search shares it is estimated that the average adult makes about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions…each day!
Thankfully, we have a God who is always with us. It is in His name, Emmanuel. With this in mind, we can lean on Him when we reach our fork in the road and ask for His guidance.
Imagine us standing in front of the two diverging paths and asking, “God, which one should I take in order to follow Your will for my life?” What a faithful picture! However, we have all had that moment when the answer is not extremely clear. Discerning God’s voice can be tough for us sometimes, especially with the words of this world filling our heads.
Even in the confusion, God will reach our hearts. We see in 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (ESV). When we have decisions to make and we have trouble hearing God’s direction, we can rest in knowing He will bring us peace to help us find comfort in our choice.
In the New Year, we may have goals and visions of who we want to be at the end of the year. The vision may be clear but the road along the way may be fuzzy. That is why it is so important to recognize God is walking along the road next to us. His presence is meant to bring us peace. He is the Prince of Peace!
No matter which path we choose - the road less traveled or not - He is with us. We have plans and visions for our life but God guides our steps. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9, NIV).
This life is an adventure. One we are meant to embark on with God.
May our lives be reflective of this glorious truth.
