"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” -Psalms 23:1 (ESV)
Throughout many seasons of my walk with God, this Psalm has been used by the Creator to bring me comfort. From the highest highs to the lowest lows, God provides His shepherding with every passing moment. However, the practice of resting in His goodness is easier said than done. The next verses in the Psalm read “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (Psalms 23:2-3, ESV).
This beautiful picture painted here shows absolute dependence and obedience on the Creator. In today’s age of self reliance, is increasingly difficult to sacrifice our pride and plans in exchange for rest in God. To be laid down in green pastures, one must learn how to walk instead of run, to sit when they want to stand, and to listen to the direction of God. To be led beside still waters, one needs to meditate on the Word and spend time in prayer for the peace of God to be gifted. This can come easily, or it can be frustrating to set aside one’s own agenda. But God is moving and He will move in you. Find rest in Him. Let Him shepherd your life. It makes a world of difference.
