When life is hard, sometimes our vision becomes so clouded by our circumstances that we neglect to see how marvelous our salvation in Christ is. I don't know about you, but I'm really good at thanking Jesus for saving me on Sunday mornings during worship or while I'm reading about Him in the New Testament. But am I overflowing with this thankfulness when I wake up each day? When life is hard and I feel worn down, is the fact that I've been saved from my sin and given eternal life what comforts me?I want so badly to answer those questions with a resounding "yes!", but I can't. In the midst of my affliction, God and His Word are certainly my comfort, but I can tend to overlook the gospel message in its most basic and simplest form. As I was reading in the Psalms one particular verse caught my attention.David said, "This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life" (Psalm 119:50, ESV). Just a few verses prior in Psalm 119:41, David refers to this promise as salvation. His comfort wasn't anything other than the fact that he had been forgiven, saved from his sin, and given eternal life.I was completely convicted. Yes, God has given us specific verses in His Word to speak truth into our hearts and minds, but what does every single event in the Bible point to? Jesus Christ and His saving work on the cross.Sometimes we really do have to go back to the basics. The promise of salvation that we have in Christ gives us life. It doesn't just sustain us through the hard times or make us feel better when life is less-than-ideal. It is the blessed assurance that this too shall pass and that our glorious eternity with Jesus awaits!Loved ones, I pray that the reality of our salvation never becomes something we take for granted. I pray that when we read God's Word, our eyes are fixed on Jesus; not on eloquent wording or the familiarity of certain passages. It is all about the gospel. It is all about Jesus.
