I am a dreamer. You can often find me deep in thought while staring off into the distance, or journaling my thoughts on the latest dream or vision that’s popped into my head. I believe God has made me this way for a purpose. However, I was recently reminded of how important it is to build my vision on a solid foundation, and fix my eyes on Jesus throughout the entire process. In order for my vision to become a reality, my hope and trust must be firmly rooted in the One who initiated it. As the author of Hebrews wrote, “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2, NIV).Following his sermon on the mount, Jesus told a story of two men, one wise and one foolish. The wise man built his house upon a rock, whereas the foolish man built his upon sand. When the storm came, the wise man’s house stood firm, while the foolish man’s house fell with a great crash. Jesus explained, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24, NIV). When we press into our dreams or visions, we must ensure that we are both listening to and practicing what God has spoken to us. Doing so requires intentionality and humility. It means laying our vision before the Lord, as Abraham did with Isaac, trusting that His way is both sovereign and good. There is a natural human tendency to run hard after a God-given vision in our own strength. Eager to please the Lord, it can be all too easy to slip into self-reliance. Jesus warned against this: “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it” (Matthew 10:39, NLT).In Christ Jesus, we have a powerful example of this sacrificial trust. With the vision of redemption ever before Him, Christ not only rooted Himself firmly, but also fixed His eyes daily on the Father. Let's follow His example, trusting the Father with our dreams, and resting in the knowledge that He can make them reality.
