Forgiveness is one of those sneaky little parts of following Jesus that we sometimes like to ignore. We will gladly welcome forgiveness for our junk. And while it may take us sometime to truly believe we’re forgiven of the “big” stuff — by God’s grace, He usually gets us there (to the place of living out of His amazing grace). But forgiving others? Maybe I’m speaking for myself and myself alone here — but that stuff is stinkin’ hard. The other day — a friend and I had a rather sizable disagreement that not only caught me completely off guard, it put me on my heels a little bit. I had to do all I could to not react and get defensive. The disagreement petered out — it wasn’t resolved, but the subtle darts stopped firing and we went our separate ways. And you know something?I was mad.It was one of those situations that I played on repeat in my head — over and over again — for most of the day. I questioned how I handled it, questioned if it really happened, and even came up with witty “comebacks” that would’ve “really shown her. You know — super Godly stuff. As someone who’s been forgiven of much (like so, so much), why is it so hard for me to forgive a friend after a little tiff?As someone who’s literally been forgiven by a spotless and righteous God, who am I to think I don’t need to be extending grace too?Forgiveness is hard, amen? And sometimes it seems nearly impossible. But with God, we’re told all things are possible. Especially the really hard ones.In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul reminds us to forgive others as Christ has forgiven us.How has He forgiven us?Relentlessly.Unabashedly.With no questions asked.Over and over and over again.
