Hey sister! What if I told you to bring the flavour? If you’re like me, you’d laugh and then probably start to feel a little confused. But then, what if I told you that Jesus was the one telling you to bring it? Woah, even more intriguing, right?
Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet” (Matthew 5:13, ESV). There are many things that salt is good for, but what is one of its most commonly used, day-to-day purposes? Bringing the flavour. Jesus said that if salt doesn’t add taste, it might as well get tossed out.
As a Christian woman, I can definitely feel a little torn between keeping it safe and keeping it exciting. I’ve seen many other women fall victim to one extreme or the other; either hiding in a shell in hopes of respecting boundaries, or turning wild in a longing for a seemingly more colourful life.
As the salt of the earth, our lives are supposed to stand out. When we show up in someone else’s life, it’s supposed to add flavour. The way we live should give people a taste of the vibrancy God adds to life. And you know what else salt does? It makes people thirsty. Thirsty for more, and that’s exactly what our testimony should plant in people: a thirst for the Living Water that lives in us.
So, where do we draw the line between both camps? What constitutes as flavour? Like most answers to these questions, I say that we’ve got to continue to remain rooted in God’s Word and stay consistent in prayer. But then I say to have fun! Delight yourself in the Lord and walk in His ways, but dance and sing and laugh endlessly while doing it. There needs to be a richness and depth to our lives in order to bring the flavour. Don’t let anything dull what you can bring to the table, girl. It’s time to get salty.
