Daily Delight

I attended my first bible camp when I was nine years old. I enjoyed learning about all the bible characters; but David and Goliath was one of my favorite stories. At the end of the week, our camp counselors promised to show us how tall Goliath was. I was so excited and could hardly wait to find out. On Friday, we filed into the cafeteria. A large blank paper that reached the ceiling covered a section of the wall. Once we took our seats, two camp counselors pulled down the paper- and there was Goliath. His head touched the cafeteria ceiling. The counselors said he was over nine feet tall."That's it!?" I exclaimed loudly as I slumped back into my seat. In my young mind, Goliath should have been hundreds of feet tall. Nine feet was not something to fear. I remember feeling so disappointed. What my nine year old self seemed to forget was to King Saul and the Israelite army, Goliath was a real threat. In 1 Samuel 17, Goliath stood before the Israelites and challenged them for 40 days; if they could kill him, the Philistines would be their servants. But if not; they would serve the Philistines. It was a big risk, and looking at Goliath's stature they thought they were on the losing end. Then David came along.David wasn't afraid of Goliath's height; he knew the God he served. He tells Goliath: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." "All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands” (1 Sam 17:45, 47). David, a mere shepherd boy, took down Goliath with sling and a stone. When the enemy makes plans for evil against us, do not fear. Remember who fights on our side. We are children of the most high God; we are blood bought. The enemy can never take that away from us. And that makes us victorious.
