Have you ever wanted to focus on whatever trial it is that you’re facing and wallow in your negative emotions? Sometimes life seems so hard and I don’t want to fight to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just want to state the obvious darkness that I’m stuck in because it feels easier than enduring it. But when I go to God, there’s no way that I can ever stay in that place, because He always brings hope.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” -Romans 15:13 (NIV)
God wants us to be real. He wants us to open our hearts and surrender all of the things that weigh us down into His loving hands. He isn’t afraid of our emotions, and in order for a relationship to be authentic, we have to be vulnerable. The psalmist David is a perfect example of someone who was totally transparent with God. He wrote poems and songs to express what He was feeling. But after he expressed himself to God, he then put aside how he was feeling and focused on the truth of God.
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” -Psalm 42:11 (NIV)
Even though our emotions are valid and God cares about them, He never wants us to stay in a place without hope. He wants us to see who He is and how He is bigger than any trial we can ever face. Be real with God, tell him how you’re feeling, and then replace those feelings with the truth of God’s word. Let Him shine His light into the darkness and change your mindset, so that you can go from despair to hope.
