Daily Delight

Are you struggling to feel fulfilled with where you’re at in life? Whether you’re a full-time student, pursuing a big-girl career, maintaining a home and raising children, or working just to pay the bills, it can be difficult to find purpose or meaning in whatever your current situation may be. It’s often easier to dwell on what we despise most about our responsibilities, what comes next in life, or what would really make us happy. When these thoughts arise, examine God’s plan for the work that we do in this life. We can see God’s plan for work from the very beginning. In Genesis, God reveals Himself as a worker. His work is seen very clearly in all of Creation. We also recognize that after His work is complete, He rests. Most incredibly, though, He reveals it all out of love and creates man and woman in His image and likeness to share in Creation, His work, with Him. He creates Adam and Eve to cultivate and care for the Garden, to rest, to love, and enter into His identity with their lives. But when sin enters the picture, it distorts where we find identity and meaning. Human desire sends us in one of two directions- work is either a miserable burden or it is our source of fulfillment. But really it wasn’t designed to be either of these things. Work was designed, rather, to be completed and offered up as an act of worship to God. Whether it's homework or doing dishes, all work has dignity because we, humans created in God’s image, do it. Which means every act of work gives us the opportunity to show Christ to the world and offer our blessings back to Him.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." -Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

Therefore, do not allow your work to become your highest source of fulfillment or slavery, but instead, allow your work to draw you closer to Jesus. Offer up your heart and your work, whatever it is, to the Lord for His Glory. And as you go about your tasks, simply pray, "Jesus, this is for you!"
