I didn’t see it coming, friend. It arrived unexpectedly and it lingered far longer than I would have liked it to. I didn’t plan to struggle with spiritual depression. It’s not really something you write on your calendar.

My battle with depression rolled in like an unexpected thunderstorm clouding a summer sky with darkness. The shining beams of joy, purpose and fulfillment that usually illuminated my mind were absent. Every waking moment seemed like a full on battle for my mind to find genuine joy, depth and meaning. My soul echoed the cry of David in Psalm 42:11, “Why, my soul, are you so downcast? Why so disturbed within me?

I knew Christians struggled with this sort of thing from time to time, but I couldn’t find the manual I needed to shake free of the mental bondage. I felt isolated and alone, just how the enemy wanted me to feel.

As I reflect back on these difficult days, I think of my sisters who read this and have been caught in this storm too or maybe are in it now. The beautiful thing about storms is they all eventually pass! The beautiful thing about darkness is that it scatters in the presence of light!

The Light of the World, He was my solution and I believe He is yours too. No step by step set of instructions but rather a step by step walk following Jesus, the Light of the World, out of darkness. It is a path you choose to take in your mind. You faithfully follow the light of Christ through the darkness as He leads you.

Follow His light as you read the scriptures aloud over yourself and believe this repels the enemy.

Follow His light as you cry out to Him in prayer and decide by faith to believe He hears you.

Follow His light into the supporting arms of godly community and share honestly where you are.

Recognize this scheme of the enemy and choose to follow Jesus out of this storm. Oh the beauty that awaits you sister! He knows the path on which you walk and there such joy, peace, and fulfillment where He is taking you!
