Full disclosure: I am not a mother, but I want to take a moment and encourage moms. My grandmother, who is one of my best friends, is 83 and has dementia. It’s been a sweet season for my family of slowing life down when we’re with her and understanding that she needs constant care and attention. In doing life with my grandmother recently, something has jumped out at me. She has reverted to childlike habits and mannerisms. Everything from what she wants to eat to how she prays- simple, but beautiful prayers. This brought Proverbs 22:6 to mind: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (ESV).Little did my great grandmother know that 80+ years later, the training my grandmother got from her would still be deeply ingrained. As a mom, that can feel daunting. However, it’s a weight that we’re not required to carry alone. My point in sharing this is to say that what you’re doing matters! Moms, you are sustained by our heavenly Father. You have an eternal role not just today, but generationally. The hard work, the love, the sacrifice you are pouring into your children—literally blood, sweat and tears—isn’t in vain. You’re pouring into future generations. The Bible talks about these generational blessings. Psalm 112:1-3 states,"Praise the Lord! Blessed is the [woman] who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments! [Her] offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in [her] house, and [her] righteousness endures forever" (ESV).Know this, moms: You are pouring generational habits, wisdom and blessings into your great grandchildren. Your child will be a grandparent to your great grandchildren who one day will be recalling memories of your child in 80+ years. What you do has significance. It’s hard, but it’s worth it. Not only for your children, but for generations to come. It’s legacy building.
