Daily Delight

Let's kick off our Friday with some real talk, shall we?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀How many times have we been told that we ought to eat more vegetables? More times than we can count, right? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We all know by now the health benefits of veggies. Unfortunately, though, if we don’t actually put down the Snickers bar and pick up a carrot, what we have heard has no benefit. We can fool ourselves into thinking that we’re “generally pretty healthy” while we munch on candy, but without applying our knowledge (finally eating that salad), we cannot receive the health benefits of vegetables.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In much the same way, we hear the Word of God in church every Sunday or in daily devotionals. As a result, we can fall into the trap of believing that because we hear the Word, we’re growing in our walks with God. But let’s not be deceived! If we do not practice the truths in the Bible, we only fool ourselves into thinking that we are becoming more like Christ.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀James implores believers to be not only hearers but doers of the Word. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀What does it mean to be a doer? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Doing requires a change of behavior. Doing can look like forgiving those who wronged us; humbling ourselves; or praying for our enemies. Doing can look like witnessing to the lost. Doing demands action.⠀Sisters, please don’t misunderstand -- hearing the Word is extremely important. Reading the Bible is absolutely vital, but if we constantly hear and never do, we are only deceiving ourselves. Without action, we are not truly following Christ. We are not growing in our relationships with God. We cannot forgive others and seek humility and love our neighbors by simply hearing that we ought to; we have to do.⠀Let’s challenge ourselves to move past only absorbing biblical truth; let’s put the truth of the Word into action! Actively pursue righteousness. Serve someone today. Pray for your friends and your enemies. There are so many ways to be doers rather than hearers only. Let’s live it out!⠀
