Recently, a friend and I were speaking on the topic of missionary work. We had both been to impoverished nations on mission trips and we were discussing the importance of mission work in our own backyards. Before I had returned from the mission trip I had been on, my pastor challenged our group about what “reality” would look like. How we would continue as missionaries in our day to day lives? The mission field is not always overseas or in an impoverished country. Jesus took His entire surroundings as His mission field. While He was in Galilee, “Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest’” (Matthew 9:35-38).Christ grew up in this region. The people to whom He was healing and teaching were perhaps once His next door neighbors and childhood friends. He saw their needs, both physical and spiritual, and gratified them. Jesus preached the Gospel to those surrounding Him in the present moment. In our walk to become more and more like Christ, we must recognize the mission field that is our day to day lives. Whether the lost sheep in your life are coworkers, acquaintances or friends, or your neighbors, they need to be introduced to the Gospel as well as those who are overseas. The harvest is plentiful. There are many souls to plant the seed of Jesus in. And once planted, it must be cultivated, followed up on, and loved. The laborers are few. In the Great Commission, Jesus commanded all who follow Him to make disciples. Be a co-laborer in Christ. Serve wherever there is a need and spread the Gospel as much as you can.
