Daily Delight

The Bible shares many different names for God, most of them you’ve probably heard or have seen printed on a magnet at some point in your life. The problem with cultural Christianity is that there is a tendency to water down the potency of what these names truly mean. For instance, I can so easily forget that God calls Himself a Healer (Ex. 15:26). This doesn’t just mean that He wants what is best, or that He hopes that we will be well. God has the power to heal! He is able to bring us to fullness of mind and body. He is able to restore our soul (Ps. 23:3). 

I was reminded of this last week when the youth group I co-lead had our annual retreat. There are students who come every week bearing burdens I can’t even begin to imagine. We of course pray for them frequently, but at this retreat, I felt very strongly that God wanted us to pray for healing. During our prayer time, we spoke life over the teens who were present and asked God together for emotional and physical healings. He met us there and we were able to see real breakthroughs that we haven’t seen for years. 

Sometimes, it takes boldness to step out in faith and ask God for something specific. Most of the time, I prefer to pray vaguely, hoping that God will do something, but too nervous to ask for the details. I forget that He wants to do good things for us. He wants to show the depths of His love. We can declare His name over any situation and know that He is powerful and able to do awe-inspiring works (Jer. 10:6, Ps. 145:6).

This week, I encourage you to do your own study on the names of God and what they say about His character. Do you truly know that He is Peace (Judges 6:23-24), or that He is the God who Provides (Gen. 22:14)? He is also The God Who Sees (Gen. 16:13), and our righteousness (Jer. 33:16). Come boldly before the Father, call to Him by name. He is able to do immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20
