Daily Delight

I had to make an important decision this week, the repercussions of which would alter the course of my life for the next year. Needless to say, I gave it a considerable amount of thought (AKA it consumed every thought that I had over the past two weeks). Not only did this process remind me that I’m a terrible decision maker, but it also revealed some lies about the character of God that had been planted in my heart. 

So often, it is easier to believe that God is who we think He is, rather than who He says He is. Perhaps we have let our experiences dictate our belief system. However, what I want to pose to you today is that God is kinder and more loving than you could ever possibly believe (Ps. 103) and that His goodness is beyond anything we could ever hope for (Lam. 3:22-23). As followers of Jesus, we need to be completely convinced of who God really is—for ourselves, but also for the sake of those who don’t know Him. 

One of the enemy’s greatest tactics is to try to convince us that God is not who He says He is. He does not want us to fully trust that God is kind, that He is faithful, and He is wholly good. When we believe the Truth, we develop a faith unmoved by the waves; we become sure of the fact that He is indeed walking on water toward us.

So, how do we move forward in light of this? Do we continue to live with our misunderstandings of the character of God? No. I’m going to invite you into a moment of response. Think through the attributes of God present in Scripture that you might not be believing rightly. Maybe you’re like me and you say God is good, but your heart has difficulty trusting that. Or perhaps you don’t believe He could ever want to be close with you. Repent of these thoughts and ask the Holy Spirit to replace these lies with the Truth. 

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
