Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights.” -Isaiah 42:1 (ESV)
This verse is so beautiful to consider the Maker of the universe declaring that He is delighted by you, His servant. You are called His tireless and devoted follower. It is equally as moving to consider that you are upheld by God, that you are chosen for His task. You do not “find” God in your searching—you are found by Him. Just so, you do not initiate the Holy Spirit to come within yourself; you are greeted with a knock.
God has entrusted you the great pleasure, and immense responsibility, to serve as His chosen helper. You are a vessel harboring His spirit, declaring the presence of the Lord. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV). What God has commissioned for you to accomplish is remain steadfast in His persisting love and mercy, remain faithful, and remain communicating the truth of the gospel. Yet, even in His directness, we fail to exhibit the sacrificial love of Jesus. We do not approach servanthood as a blessing, but rather question the reality before us.
Has He failed us thus far? No. So why do we wander from His call? “Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ orYour work has no handles’” (Isaiah 45:9, ESV). We are like clay pots, vessels containing the Holy Spirit, which has been worked according to His purpose. It does not matter what shape you are fashioned into—you have purpose nonetheless.
It does not matter if you are adorned with jewels or valuable metals. It is not the appearance of a vessel, but the willingness to submit wholeheartedly to the commission that God has placed before us. We are the hands and feet emanating out from the beating heart of Christ. Let us not take up laziness, but approach each step with never ceasing joy like the devoted servant.
God will dictate where our steps take us, let us simply step out.
