“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you...Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Peter 1:3-4, 8).
There is beauty in restlessness. I have to remind myself that there is a purpose in discontentment sometimes. Deep down, I think we’ve all felt as though there has got to be more to life, more to church, more to faith. We watch the news and feel hopeless, we compare ourselves to everyone around us, we numb uncertainty with hours of Netflix. Personally, I have these moments all the time. I used to apologize to God for my discontent. I felt like I was somehow betraying Him if I wasn’t happy with where I was in life, but He keeps challenging me that it’s ok to want more.
I love these verses in 1 Peter because they remind me that I was brought to a “living hope” in Jesus. It isn’t an eventual reality, it lives with me. It’s the hope that heaven is my reality. The uncomfortable yearning for something better, different, greater is really a reminder that my soul is not meant to find its purpose on Earth. The world does not satisfy, only God does.
The next time you feel that nagging sense of restlessness, don't run from it. Ask God where He is in the midst of it. The One who created your soul knows what you need. Let Him meet you in your confusion. Allow Him to show you the living hope that does not waver and a joy that is inexpressible.
