Daily Delight
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." -Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
When I get busy, it often feels like the first thing to go is my Bible reading time. Of course I know I need God. Of course I know His word is vital. Of course I love His truth. But let's be honest, when I have fifteen things on my to-do list and only a couple of hours to do them, sitting down with the Holy Spirit doesn't feel like my top priority. During the last church service I went to, the pastor's most simple statement convicted me most: you need every bit of time with the Lord you can get. Need it, not just want it. I sometimes see Bible time as just something I would like to have if I wasn't so busy, but maybe instead it is the thing I truly need most.
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God"' (Matthew 4:4, NIV).
The Word of God is the vessel of transformation and power that God has given to us. In rejecting it, or even just ignoring it and putting it as our lowest priority, we are also rejecting the greatest source of encouragement and strength in our lives. As I struggle through another busy week, I vow not to complain that I "just don't have time for the Word," because the real truth is that I can't afford not to have time in the Word.
