Did you know that anxiety disorders are the most common illness in the United States? Over 18% of the population, 40 million adults, are affected according to ADAA.
The onset of anxiety and/or depression is triggered by a multitude of factors. When there are chemical imbalances in the brain, what feels like a 10 lb weight on one’s heart, a dark hole we can’t seem to get out of…. Where does God factor in?
What’s interesting is the number of times ‘worry’ is called out in the Bible. Though the definition of worry is different from anxiety, the act of worrying is often involved in an anxious state. We’re straight up called out in Matthew 6:25, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”.
Though that is a direct action in scripture, again, I go back to that dark place I’ve felt.. There is little that can pull me from there, or so I lead myself to believe.
In those moments, I think the boldest and bravest thing we can do is release in prayer. I’m talking on the knees, non-filtered, deep release of the depths of our soul. Giving it to Him. For a long time I was under the impression God didn’t want my mess… God wanted me at my best all of the time. So, I turned away from him in those moments, every single time. It’s only very recently that I realized how this isn’t how God operates even a little bit. He wants, craves rather, us to come to Him and Him alone. That’s the deal he worked out with us even before we graced this planet with our souls…. That’s the deal we have on the table.

It’s up to us whether we will be brave, be bold and find a way to give it to Him. Take shelter in the call to action in Matthew 11:28-29: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls".
