Daily Delight
“But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” -2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV)
As I prepare for my Bar examinations, I’ve been wracked with insecurity over my weaknesses – not being hardworking enough, not having a good enough memory, not having a sharp enough mind. And as any good Christian, I pray and remind myself that I don’t have to compare myself to my peers and that I can rest in Christ. But after my third breakdown last week, I came across this verse and was urged to go to the heart of the matter: how I felt about my weaknesses.
As Christians, we try to forget, fight to subdue and seek to free ourselves from anything that might resemble weakness. We brush over them and ask God for strength. But God wants us to feel our weaknesses deeply, not just when we go to Him in formal prayer or in times of difficulty but to walk around with them as thorns in our flesh. He wants us to be humbled by them and to rejoice in them for they are the means through which we experience His grace and power. As He did in Paul who was given a thorn in his flesh by a messenger of Satan, God works in our weaknesses to triumph over the Enemy’s intentions, in the same way that Jesus Christ turned the greatest tragedy into the greatest victory on the Cross.
Moving forward, I have decided to focus less on enhancing my strengths and more on embracing my weaknesses.
Let us strive to heartily accept and continually realize our weaknesses. Let us anticipate the power of Christ that may be magnified through them so that we may truthfully say, ‘I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
