“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:14, ESV). As women, we are privileged to play many esteemed roles. Wife, mother, sister, friend—yet all of these pale in comparison to our role as daughters of the living God. When you hear the word ‘woman’, are you not struck with the sentiment that we, as women, are designed for an inherently special purpose as God’s chosen daughters? Looking towards women of the Gospel, we see Hannah, humble and faithful (1 Samuel 1:11), Esther, brave in the hopes of saving others (Esther 4:11), Rahab, loyal and faithful (Joshua 2:11), and Sarah, despite having doubts, mother to the nation of Israel (Hebrews 11:11). They were women, like you and I, commissioned by God to accomplish His will, and like us, imperfect people capable to be moved to further the kingdom of God. In every situation, they faced adversity or the possibility of even death, but the spirit of God worked through these women to tell a story that illuminates the fact that broken sinners were utilized to demonstrate the grace and mercy of a loving father—a story continued to be told more than two thousand years later. It was not in spite of their brokenness, but because of their brokenness that this is exhibited. The stories of these women resonate with me because I can see that God uses our brokenness to point us, and others, back to Him. I have full confidence that this is true, the confidence that can only come from God, because unbeknownst to me in my brokenness, being fourteen and in the midst of struggling with an eating disorder, God transformed my life to allow me to use my story to communicate the truth of the Gospel to others nearly six years later. There is a quote that my mother always says: “there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in” (Leonard Cohen). Allow Him to search your heart; He knows the capability of a broken sinner to shine His truth unto all the Earth.
