Last week, I flew home to the state I grew up in to visit family and friends. The first place I visited was the home of my grandparents. My grandpa has been sick for a few years, and though he has been fighting the battle, he has only gotten worse and worse. After sitting with him and talking to him for a while, he ended up passing away in a few hours time. The most heartbreaking part of it all was seeing my grandma’s pain in losing her lifelong husband and friend. I longed to bring peace and comfort to her, but I didn’t know how, as I knew that my grandparents believed in God but didn’t have a relationship with Him and know Him on an intimate level.

But then I was reminded of how the peace of God lives inside of me, through the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27, NLT). I was also reminded of words I had been given prior to my trip about being a person who brings peace where I go. Not only had the Lord prepared me, but He also equipped me. Jesus says again in John, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NLT).

Even though there are moments of pain in the world that we can’t fully comprehend, Jesus is telling us there isn’t a single thing we can go through that He hasn’t also gone through and come out of on the other side. He has given us true peace that goes beyond the superficial peace the world offers, and because of that, I was able to pray and bring the tender and comforting words of the Father to my grandma. I was also able to mourn, as well as rejoice, knowing that my hope is in the Lord and believing the truth that my grandpa is in heaven to enjoy the presence of the Lord for the rest of his days.
