Daily Delight

The digital gauge in our car said two miles until empty. I was getting nervous, but I was pretty sure I could make it to the gas station. Then, it went to one mile, and I started panicking. I did not want to run out of gas and be stuck. Oh God, please let me make it. I'm so close. Please don't let me run out of gas! Please, please God! When the number went to one, I immediately started praying those words out loud, over and over again. Then it hit me. 

In the midst of my panicky prayers for God to let the drop of gas I had left stretch until the gas station, guilt washed over me. That was my first prayer all day. I hadn't thanked my Father for anything, praised Him for who He is—nothing! Then, as soon as I needed help, I cried out to Him as if He is a genie or something. Maybe this isn't the best analogy, but the point remains the same, and it really hit me that day. Our relationship with God is the most important one we have. He deserves our whole hearts, which means we talk to Him continually throughout the day.

James 5:13 says, "Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise" (ESV). If you're like me, you do that first part just fine! But look at the second half. Are we praying even when life is smooth—when we are happy and not in need of anything? It's so easy to get into a rhythm of only talking to our Father when we need His help. But friends, His Word tells us to do otherwise. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 tells us to pray without ceasing in thanks, in times of trouble, in times where we are questioning His ways, in times of rejoicing and praise—all the time! Think about the closest people in your life. Do you only talk to them when you need their help? Probably not. We talk to the people we love most all the time because they are deep relationships. 

So, how much more is God deserving of our communication? Together, let's live out Colossians 4:2: "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful" (NIV).
