For the despondent, every day brings trouble; for the happy heart, life is a continued feast.
–Proverbs 15:15 (NLT)

As I sat in Bible study this past week, we discussed the impact choosing joy can have on our lives. Our sweet leader challenged us to spend some time thanking God for the seemingly small things, such as the ability to taste, hear, and see. While it made sense at the time, I’ve had a hard time putting this into practice.Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. There are days (sometimes months) when naming one good thing feels like climbing Mt. Everest because life has been hard and hurtful. Unfortunately, this is a side effect of living in a broken world.I’m learning that there is great value in choosing joy, especially when doing so is difficult. Proverbs 15:15 provides us with a vivid image that contrasts the life of someone who focuses on the negative and someone who chooses positivity. A person who focuses on the negative sees only the trials and trouble a day can bring. When we choose to see the good things each day brings, our eyes are opened to the continual feast of life, full of joy and simple adventure. Maybe you’re going through a season where joy feels farther than ever because you have experienced trauma or hurt. Please do not think this means that you need to shove your pain aside and fake happiness. Far from it! Rather, I encourage you to ask God to meet you in this difficult season; ask Him to be your comforter; ask Him to reveal to you one good thing that you can cling to as you wait for joy to come.

If even that is too much, call on a friend to come alongside and encourage you as God calls us to (1 Thess. 5:11). For those of you like me, who simply need to remember to count our blessings, let’s ask God to help us, to reveal to us the countless ways He has been at work in our lives, big and small. There is a continual feast set before us! Let’s choose to enjoy it.{photo: @victorialemosphotography
