Daily Delight
“Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified” (Galatians 2:16, NIV).
Sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to maintain our salvation; we disregard the fact that Jesus set us right once and for all on the cross and we lose sight of the fact that we will never be able to deliver ourselves from the consequence of sin. Even though Christianity created liberation from religion, from the Pharisees who were compulsively collecting laws to abide by, we often squander our newfound freedom in Christ by doing the same. If I don’t (drink, gossip, cheat, have sex)…If I do (give tithes, go to church)…The truth of the matter is that we can’t look into the immensity of our sins and truly, truly believe that anything we could do could correct the wrongdoings of our past, and our present, and our future.
“All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that’s the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end” (Romans 5:20-21, MSG).
Following Christ does not mean that we will not stumble, it means that when it comes to who we are, Jesus is changing the narrative. This doesn’t go to say that we shouldn’t aim to abide by His word; He has left us with a memoir of truth, justice, love, redemption, and salvation to follow. Let us rejoice in a grace that always triumphs over sin and our God who delivers it.
