Daily Delight

Do you ever come across a narrative from the Bible (specifically the OT in this case) that makes you think, "How do I not remember this?”

This happened to me a couple of months ago. I was in the middle of doing a Bible study with a friend on prayer and our study led us to 2 Chronicles 20.

Three different armies were coming up against King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. When some of his men deliver this scary news to the king, Scripture says, "Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. And Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord" (2 Chronicles 20:3-4, ESV). 

The next several verses reveal Jehoshaphat's long prayer to God, praising Him for His power and asking for His help in this awful situation. I love how Jehoshaphat ends his prayer to the Lord: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You" (2 Chronicles 20:12, ESV). 

What a beautiful example we have tucked away in Scripture! When hardships come, are we looking to our Father first? When we are afraid and powerless in a situation, do we turn to Him in praise and trust? I love that Jehoshaphat was afraid because it shows us that he was as human as we are. And he was scared just like anyone else would be in this situation. However, his fear did not keep him from seeking God's help above all else!

After his prayer, the spirit of God came upon a man named Jahaziel, saying to the people in verses 15-17, "Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God's...The Lord will be with you." 

Wow. What a sweet reminder that God is fighting for us. The King and his people start worshiping God and singing praises to Him. And while they were singing, the Lord sends an ambush against the three armies. 

God was faithful in return to their faith-filled prayers.

Let us be reminded by this story to turn to God first and foremost when we are afraid. He is powerful, sovereign, and worthy of our trust, and He is fighting for us.
