He had waited, and was still waiting. Whenever he could he made his way to the temple, seeking God as much as he could. For years Simeon had come, trying to govern his life according to God’s laws that he had given to his people Israel. The Holy Ghost had shown him that before he died he would see the Christ that the scriptures prophesied! He didn’t know where or when, but he still just waited. He had thought through that moment for years; someday soon, his Messiah would come.
He imagined what he would look like…what the Messiah would say. This day seemed different; the Spirit was moving. He brought his sacrifice to the priest; he was making his way towards the door when he saw the young couple with the baby. The Holy Ghost spoke in his heart and he knew this was Him; this baby was the Messiah. In all of his portrayals of this moment it had never occurred to him that it would be a baby he would meet! He gathered the child into his arms and blessed God for his salvation! (Luke 2:25-32)
Have you ever pictured to yourself what God’s provision is going to look like? You’ve set your mind on how things are going to work out and when it doesn’t happen that way…God what are you thinking? Don’t You know this needs to happen? Of course He does. His plan is better than ours. Simeon thought he knew what God’s provision would look like, just like we often try to predict what He’s going to do. When it doesn’t go the way we plan, we can’t imagine how God’s plan could be better! But it is…one of the most beautiful things about the story of Jesus is how exquisitely it all comes together even while none of it makes sense! Trust the love of your Father, when it doesn’t look the way you expect.
I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord… O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. -Psalm 34:1-4 (KJV)
