"When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
-Genesis 22:9 (ESV)

This verse is usually the part of the story of Abraham where I start shaking my head in complete awe of his faith. God commanded him to take Isaac and sacrifice him as a burnt offering. So the next day, Abraham got up early and took his son and two other men with him to the mountain. Abraham gathered the supplies, led Isaac to the altar, and tied him down. As soon as Abraham was about to strike his son, an angel stopped him. Abraham had passed the test.

Scripture shows no indication of delay, doubt, or fear from Abraham. In fact, we are told in Hebrews 11:17-19 that Abraham was so confident in God, he believed God would raise Isaac from the dead. He was a father about to sacrifice his son with his own hands, something that would be horrific and devastating to Abraham. Yet all that is recorded in Scripture is Abraham's obedience and his faith in God. This is perhaps one of the most convicting passages in the Bible to me. We know God was testing Abraham, but we aren't told if Abraham knew that. His faith was solid, whether he knew it was a test or not.

When I put myself in Abraham's place, I can't say I would be able to carry through with God's command. When God calls me to do something, I am often afraid and doubt His provision.

Perhaps God is calling you to something that seems scary; something that is so unknown or out of your comfort zone that causes you to question His faithfulness and doubt His provision. Today, I want to encourage you to remember Abraham.

Let our faith be so strong in our Father, who we know is faithful, that we are willing to do anything He asks of us. Let us trust in God's provision and plan, and not let the fear of the unknown lead us down a path of disobedience. We serve a faithful God who provides all that we need (Philippian 4:19, ESV).
