Let Us Consider

In case you’re not familiar, the book of Job shares the account of a man who honored God in the midst of great suffering and proved that his devotion was not tied to the things he’d been given from God, but tied to God Himself. In the end Job, is healed and what he lost was restored beyond measure. Along the way, however, he received some poor advice.

"Curse God and Die"

Today, I want to focus on the words of his wife. In Job 2:9 she says to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die” (ESV). At this point, Job had lost his oxen, sheep, camels, children, and now his very own health. Now I dare not say what my disposition would have been in this very situation, but would like to think I would never advise my spouse or anyone for that matter, to “Curse God and die.” But as John Bradford puts it, “There but for the grace of God, go I.” With that said, I trust I would never be found giving such sinful advice, and I trust the same for you.

Iron Sharpens Iron

In hindsight, we can always see what makes sense. But in the midst of trials and sufferings can we, like Job, say, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job 1:21, ESV)? Better yet, when those we know are going through their valley seasons, can we be sweet encouragement? Can we offer words of wisdom because we believe wholeheartedly that God is good?I hope this is the case because it is a blessed thing to be able to say yes to these questions. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (NIV).

Let Us Consider

Dear sister, my prayer for us this day is that God would make us iron to our spouses, siblings, friends, colleagues, whomever! That we would be a godly influence in their lives above all else, and that they, too, would be the same for us.“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24, ESV).
