The God Who Sees Me

Have you ever felt invisible? As if God has forgotten about you?

I remember watching all my friends get married and start their families. I believed the lie that God didn't care about the desires of my heart. I felt like He had looked right past me.

In honor of Mother's Day, a day that can hold so much weight, I want to remind all of the women reading this that, no matter the circumstances, the Lord our God has not forgotten you.

One of my favorite names for God is El Roi, which is Hebrew for "the God who sees me." In Genesis 16, we read of a difficult situation. Sarai convinces Abram to sleep with her servant Hagar so that they can have a child. This is because Sarai couldn't conceive. Hagar does conceive, but it creates much animosity between her and Sarai. So much so that in Genesis 16:7-13, we see Hagar flee to the desert to escape Sarai's harshness.

Maybe, like Hagar, you feel like you are on your own, with no one to support you; no one who understands you. Perhaps, like Sarai, you're unable to conceive, or, like Hagar, you've become pregnant but the situation is less than ideal. Maybe you are still single and waiting for an opportunity to marry and start a family, but it feels as if it will never happen.

Although Hagar fled to the desert alone, she was met by an angel of the Lord who spoke to her about her future son. In Genesis 16:13, Hagar responds to the angel by giving him the name I love: "So she named the Lord who spoke to her: 'You are El-Roi,' for she said, 'In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?'" (ESV)

In the face of her heartache, God showed up and reminded Hagar that He saw her.

I don't know what is weighing on your heart today, but I believe that God wants to speak to you, right where you are, and let you know that He sees you and His plan for your life is nothing short of pleasing and perfect.

Let's pray...

Father, You know the cries of my heart and the longings I have. Forgive me when I have agreed that You don't care about me. Would You reveal Yourself to me today, and remind me that You see me! Thank You that You haven't forgotten me, You love me, and You know where I am! In Jesus' name, amen.
