The Power of Surrender: Trusting God's Perfect Plan for Your Life

Open hands in a stance of surrender are shown and the part of the hymn called, "I Surrender All" is pictured

One of my favorite hymns, "I Surrender All," is a beautiful reminder to [daily] surrender my life to Jesus.

It was not always easy, to give over "control" of my life. Sometimes I still struggle. The notion that things might not go the way I have planned can make me feel anxious. But learning that God cares so deeply for me changed how I view giving Him my life. It was never mine to begin with. As 1 Peter 2:9 tells us, "He called me out of darkness and into His marvelous light" (ESV). I know His plans are better than anything I could ever plan for my life.

Surrender is to trust in God's plan for your life wholly. It can be hard to do this when mountains face us, blocking our view of what is to come. But we place our trust in a Higher Power, in Someone who can not only see over the mountains but the bigger picture that lies far beyond them. Someone who can see our whole life and the promises He has laid out for us. (See Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Our plans may not align with God's plans. When we find ourselves at this crossroads we must yield to His will.

How do you go about surrendering? You pray fervently to God. Even if you don't fully understand or know what to do next, you can give it to Him and ask for His peace over what you are facing. (1 Peter 5:7)

I know it can be scary to give things over. I have been there many times in my life. I have clung so desperately to something I have longed for, neglecting to see my Savior tenderly calling to give it to Him. He knows best. Thus, it's okay to let go.

Maybe God plans to give you what you've been clinging to at some point in the future. Perhaps He has plans for something different. Ultimately, God deeply loves us and wants us to trust Him with our lives.

Sister, I want to encourage you to give God control of what you are holding onto. Come to Him in prayer, seek His face and goodness, and let go. Fall into His open arms and the promises He has in store for you.
