Unveiling the Wisdom in Titus 2:3-5: How Mentorship Shapes Godly Women
Have you ever read a verse in the Bible that continued to yield information the more you read it? The book of Titus has been like this for me as of late. As I settled into reading through it again I couldn't help but see Titus 2:3-5 in a new light:
"Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children. To be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled" (ESV).
I've always found this verse from Titus interesting to read, but something caught my attention during my recent reread: "They are to teach what is good" (Titus 2:3b)
I found this interesting because the word "teach" implies that the traits listed in this verse do not come naturally to us. They are things we need instruction for; things we cannot produce on our own accord.
We need to learn how to be self-controlled, pure, working in our homes, kind, and submissive towards our husbands.
How do we learn these traits if they don't come naturally to us? Where do we seek our wisdom to glorify God in our lives? There are two important factors.
First, we must actively seek God and His will, pursuing Him through His Word. Secondly, Titus tells us that we should seek mentorship in older women who successfully living out these virtues.
Having an older woman mentoring and guiding you in your walk with Christ is precious. These women are a fountain of knowledge and will lovingly guide and correct where we are lacking spiritually.
An older woman could be a friend, a mother, a mother-in-law, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a woman from your church, or someone who has seen the fruits of their labor pursuing Christ and the virtues listed in Titus.
I encourage you to seek out someone like this so that you might grow in your faith and one day become the Titus older woman to another sister in Christ.
