What God Says About Rest

How is it that after a vacation I'm more exhausted than when I started?

The holidays are a fun time to take a break from work and be with family and friends, but being out of my routine exhausts me.

Sometimes, my brain tricks me. You see, I think that if I watch a few more movies I’ll feel rested. Or, if I take one more day off and go do something I love then I’ll feel refreshed.

But there is nothing I can do in my own power to hold on to rest. At least, not in the way that brings true refreshment. I tend to forget that true rest comes from Jesus and not from all the restful things I fill my schedule with. I also forget that He is able to refresh me even in the busyness.

In case you can relate, here are a few reminders from Scripture about what God says is true concerning rest and refreshment:

  • Jeremiah 31:25: “For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish” (ESV).

  • Isaiah 40:31: "but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint" (ESV).

  • Psalm 19:7: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple…” (ESV).

  • Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (ESV).

  • Philemon 1:7: “For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” (ESV)

  • 1 Corinthians 16:18: “For they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men” (ESV).

In His perfect timing, God satisfies the empty, tired, burdened soul. Knowing Him and spending time with Him brings replenishment. Depending and waiting on Him brings us what we need.

God’s Word revives our spirits.

There is restoration that comes through reading His Word. There is joy, comfort, and refreshment to be found through others who are in Jesus.

Look to Him. For He alone will provide rest, strength, and power.
