Daily Delight
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” -2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)
I’ve never thought of myself as a “discipler,” but the phrase “you reproduce who you are” reminds me that intentionally or not, we are discipling people every day. Remember when your mom would warn “Do you wanna be just like Sally there in detention? If you keep hanging around her, you’ll be getting in just as much trouble!” (Certainly there’s something to be said for finding Sally a mentor…) Our moms said this because you really do begin sounding and acting more like the people you surround yourself with, even in the tiniest things. The people in your office chew gum and you find yourself buying some Trident the next time you shop. Your professor uses a certain phrase and after the thirtieth utterance, you begin using it, too. Or you have a friend who volunteers for Meals on Wheels and you join just to spend time with her.Throughout our days, we make decisions that seem to be on our own, but in reality, are a result of who we spend time with. Think about it: who generally gets your 9-5 attention? Your spare moments? Or better yet, who gives you their extra time and what will they pick up after an afternoon, a weekend or even years of friendship with you? It’s sobering to grasp how large our sphere of influence truly is!It doesn’t matter if you don’t have kids, you aren’t a teacher or a coach. You’re motivating people all the time, and some of those people are going to make a choice because they saw you make it first. For me, this realization sparks intentionality. How is God asking you to ‘preach’ this week? Modesty with your clothes? Stewardship with your finances? Silence before Jesus? God has called each of us to pass on His truth, so let’s not stumble through our days accidentally, but choose to live on purpose – for ourselves and all who are following!
