Daily Delight
Let’s cut to the chase here: Everything you’ve ever heard about weaknesses is probably out of line with what we find in Scripture. You see — the world likes to tell us that our weaknesses make us weak. Since the day we are born, we are told that our deficiencies and our lacking disqualify us from fully pursuing whatever it is that the world defines as success. If we stutter, we’re told we’ll never be a public speaker. If we limp, we’re told we’ll never be an athlete. If we have a learning disability, we’re told we’ll never make good grades. If we struggle with anxiety or depression, we’re told we’ll never be able to cope with everyday stressors. Messages like this (whether outright or concealed) are in direct opposition to the truth of God’s word.Throughout Scripture we see imperfectly “weak” people used mightily by God and for God.Moses had a speech impediment.Martha worried about everything.Elijah was suicidal.Jacob had a limp. The list? It goes on and on.But here’s the deal: God doesn’t see our weakness as reasons to count us out of the race. Instead, He seeks our weakness as fertile ground for His name to be made great and for His power to be put on display. The Disciple Paul says this perfectly in his letter to the church at Corinth:
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10, ESV).
