When a relationship I was in for two years ended, I quickly became aware of what God was going to teach me through it: contentment. I had these ideas in my head about a future rose gold engagement ring, the Pinterest wedding, and a magazine-worthy home. The realization came to me that if one conversation could shift my reality of that happening, I needed to be rooted in a firmer foundation. From there, God continued to uncover other areas in my life where my contentment needed to be refined and strengthened. My discontentment was rearing it's ugly head everywhere. In Philippians, Paul writes, "Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:11-13, ESV).Just to add some perspective, Paul was in prison. He had no home, no one there for companionship, and no earthly items offering him comfort. In verse 11 we read that Paul had to learn contentment. He had to devote himself to the practice of being content. Then in verse 13 we're told how Paul found contentment: through the strength Christ had given him.Deep, unexplainable and euphoric contentment comes from Christ. Through Him, by Him, and only because of Him can we do an inventory check at any moment of our life and no matter what we find or don't find, still be filled to the brim in joy and peace. Learning contentment requires living in God's Word, because the more we taste of Him the less we'll crave of the world. God used that breakup to show me that nothing and no one on this earth will ever fill the void in me that only God can enter into and satisfy. So whether I face plenty or hunger, abundance or need, I already have everything because I have Christ.
