What do you do when things don’t pan out like you thought they would? How do you handle the uninvited and unwanted moments of disappointment that knock on your door?

The more life we live the more we are confronted by the fact that life in a fallen world has more bumps in the road and unexpected turns than we anticipated. The new job, new relationship, new season of life we’ve prayed for and dreamed about for so long was supposed to bring such fulfillment and yet fulfilled does not describe the condition of the soul.

Have you ever been in this place?

We know that as Christians, we shouldn’t search for fulfillment and meaning in the things of this world and that Christ needs to fill the void in our souls. We know this is true. So, why then does disappointment still find us from time to time?

When the new opportunity, new relationship or new exciting season of life finally arrives and fails to be all we thought it would be, we feel the disappointment that comes as a result of our shattered expectations. Far too often, we allow our expectations of how life should go to occupy too large of a territory in our lives.

Joy, hope and change all begin to take root in soil where surrender is present. Oh, the peace that comes when we lay down our expectations of how life should be at His feet! It is in our moments of disappointment that we can rejoice in the fact that God’s plan is beautiful, perfect and far too deep to be fully comprehended!

Maybe you find yourself amongst the brokenness of shattered expectations today. If so, let me pray for you.

Father, forgive us for clinging too tightly to our expectations and losing sight of the goodness of your plan. Lord we live with limited vision and cannot see or comprehend all you are doing in the mess to make it beautiful. Today, we lay down our expectations at your feet and ask for your help to trust you, your timing and your plan for our lives. Thank you for your unconditional love and grace towards us. Amen.
