For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” -James 1:23-25 (ESV)

Do you have mirrors in your life? I’m not talking about the mirror you look at as you put your makeup on in the morning. I’m talking about idols.Let’s take the friend mirror, for example. Perhaps you have that one friend who “isn’t as good as you”, so you look at her life to make yourself feel better about yours. Or maybe, you have the other friend- you know, the one you could “never measure up to”, and you loathe yourself because of it.And then there’s the mirror of social media. When we look into this mirror, we lose ourselves to the trap of comparison and “perfection”. Sisters, we must stop looking into the mirrors of other peoples’ lives—trying to figure out what we “need” to change—and focus our efforts on God’s Word and being changed by it instead!James tells us that Scripture is like a mirror. We can run to the Word of the Lord to find a true reflection of ourselves. But how do we really know what we look like? Do we look at ourselves once and know every detail? Of course not. We learn this over time, by constantly studying our hearts. Likewise, to truly know the reflection of our hearts, we have to fully devote ourselves to the Word. Scripture tells us that we are transformed by the renewal of our minds. (Romans 12:2)

When we look into the mirror of Christ, we must be willing to change what is wrong. Sis, do not walk away unchanged just because it is too painful. James 1:25 says, “for the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”Look to Christ, the perfect mirror, and be transformed by the renewal of your mind through studying His written Word!
