A few days ago, my children got into a fight. Normally I intervene in some way, but this time I allowed the space for them to create their own outcome.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀After my youngest sat in a tear-filled pile for several minutes, she stood up to seek out her sister. I heard her through deep breaths say, “I’m sorry I got mad at you.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My other daughter calmly replied, “It’s okay, I got mad at you too.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀They hugged and went off to play with one another. During their play, I heard them checking with each other to make sure what they did was okay. They didn’t want to cause another explosion of anger between one another. It's a big thing for anyone, let alone a child, to recognize something they did was wrong, admit to it, apologize, and then work to find the boundaries they need to create in order to avoid the conflict to happen again.Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (ESV).The definition of honor is, "to regard with great respect".We all do not have to think or act in the same ways, but as brothers and sisters in Christ, we should always have the decency to extend respect to one another.Maybe this means you try to avoid conflict with someone else, instead of seeking it out. Maybe this means that you learn to humble yourself when you know you’ve been wrong and apologize. Maybe this means that you learn to hold your tongue and quiet your thoughts so you can learn to give room for respect for another child of God.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We all won’t agree on everything, but we can all agree on ONE thing: God deeply loves all His children and wants us to learn how to devote ourselves in love and honor one another.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My own two daughters disagreed. They were both hurt by what was said and done between them, but they chose to come back together in love and honor one another as they learned the boundaries needed to show each other respect.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀How can you extend love and respect to your sisters in Christ today?
