Daily Delight

Faith has a way of multiplying blessings. In 2 Kings, we are introduced to a widow who has lost her livelihood and is about to lose her children to creditors looking to use them as slaves. She cries out, and what follows is one of my favorite faith “pep talks” in the Bible.

“Elisha said, ‘Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.’ She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, ‘Bring me another one.’ But he replied, ‘There is not a jar left.’ Then the oil stopped flowing. She went and told the man of God, and he said, ‘Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.’”- 2 Kings 4:3-7 (ESV)

This poor woman was desperate. The life she knew was gone and she was about to lose what little she had left. I have not walked in her exact shoes but I have cried out in desperation. I have begged to know why my husband broke his back and have cried countless tears watching him wrestle with an injury that has robbed him of so much. All I saw was what we had lost and what we were loosing still.

I slowly learned to fully give my fears and anxiety to God. I had absolutely no control over what was happening to us, but I could control whether or not I was giving my concerns to God and letting Him carry my burdens. I had nothing to give but my faith and I am just in awe of how God has multiplied it.

Our circumstances, as desperate as they may be at times, do not define us. Whether it is losing a loved one, battling a disease, living in poverty, none of it changes who we are in Christ. We are dearly loved by a good, good Father who works all things together for His good and glory.

Go gather your jars, pour out the faith you have left and watch God work wonders!
