People-Pleaser. Go-Getter. Perfectionist. Those titles shaped me into a model student, a friend that was always up for anything, and even got me hired a few times! I made it pretty far with those titles. I could get. it. done.Although those things weren’t sinful by themselves, I was relying on my own personal qualities instead of the example I see in Jesus. “After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray” (Matt. 14:23 CSB). While our society praises better, faster, more, Jesus’ life is one of sincerity and stillness. A man who had more to accomplish than anyone, He consistently chose time with His Father instead and waited for God's plan above all.Jesus, being God Incarnate, wouldn’t have the same constraints that we do- and yet, His life models setting limits and a constant need for communion with God. If the Messiah needed to live like that, how much more do we?! Do you think at 20 yrs old Jesus ever wondered, “I wish we could get things started already!?” Through intimacy with His Father, however, He knew there was a purpose in waiting. Do you think when it was time to move on, He ever wished that He could stay and see to every last need? I would bet so. And yet, He knew God’s best sometimes means disappointing others to rest and refresh Himself for the next day’s work. What about when He was walking with Jairus – do you think He wanted Jairus to feel pain upon learning they were too late, that his daughter had died? Of course not! But Jesus knew the beautifully redemptive moment He would have with the woman who touched His robe would be just as important as the healing that would take place in Jairus’ home moments later. When we choose what will get the most “likes” versus what God is saying, or when our planner runs our day instead of God’s Word, we will continue to miss the incredible and transformative power God has for us if we take the time to seek Him first. No amount of accolades are worth missing God’s best, so let’s choose to be still before our Father today. His rest and direction await!

About the Author

Jessica Hendrick

Jessica lives in Chesapeake, VA with her husband, Bryan, and their two young children, Jack & Jane. Never in a million years would she have thought after getting her Masters in Counseling and studying Biofeedback that she would forego job applications and become a stay-at-home mom, but God revealed the true desire of her heart that year.

She happily serves as the Women’s Ministry Director at her local church and relishes any opportunity God gives her to encourage women in their spiritual journey.
Whenever she isn’t pouring over homeschool curriculums or attending a UVA football game, you can find her taste-testing at the nearby Krispy Kreme.
